The Russian Revolution in UkraineMarch 1917 – April 1918MemoirsBy Nestor Makhno
The opening period of the Russian Revolution has not been sufficiently studied by anarchists, despite the immense wealth of lessons that such a study offers.
The establishment of the Bolshevik government, and the fierce repression it unleashed against the revolution’s leading figures and active participants, have prevented the world from learning about the long and bitter struggles waged by the various parties competing for Power, and by the libertarians and anarcho-syndicalists who defended the integrity of the Social Revolution.
In Ukraine, under the inspiration of Nestor Makhno and his anarchist companions, supported by workers and peasants who longed for their full emancipation, the revolution reached its highest development. This continued until 1921, when the statist communists, using the immense resources at their disposal throughout Russia, drowned the Makhnovshchina in blood, amid the indifference and incomprehension of the international anarchist movement.
The first volume of Makhno’s memoirs, The Russian Revolution in Ukraine — March 1917 to April 1918 — has been published in French, and the second volume is due to appear shortly.
The editorial group of Prismas, in agreement with companion Makhno, and recognizing the need for this work to be known and studied, has decided to prepare a Spanish version and to undertake this task — a task beyond its own strength — trusting that the help and support of all will make up for the limited resources of a few.
Since it is impossible to publish the work in a single volume, The Russian Revolution in Ukraine will be issued in fortnightly instalments of 32 bindable pages. The first volume will consist of ten instalments.
The subscription price for the first volume — that is, for ten instalments — has been set as low as possible: 8 francs for France and Belgium, and 2 pesetas 10 céntimos for other countries, with no discount and postage included.
Individual numbers will not be supplied. Therefore, we ask all those interested in helping us carry out this fine work to subscribe, either directly or collectively by locality, by sending payment to Joachim Puech, 22 rue Solferino, Béziers (Hérault). Residents of France should use postal cheque 93-58 Montpellier; in other countries, payment should be made by international money order.
The first instalment of The Russian Revolution in Ukraine will appear on 15 August.
